Abstract
This paper presents a method for automated calculation of Size-specific dose estimates (SSDE)which is the dose levels taking the patients¡¯ organ size into consideration in pediatric CT examinations. The conventional CT dose index (CTDI) and dose length product (DLP) appearing on dose reportswhich are provided by CT manufacturer are the estimate values based on the 16cm or 32 cmpoly-methyl methacrylate (PMMA) phantoms for brain and body examinations, respectively. However, there are discrepancies between from those values and the real doses exposed to each patient as thesizes of patient body are different from that of those phantoms. We have developed an automatedmethod for calculating the body size of each patient by applying an image segmentation technique tothe image data of CT exam, and extracting reported dose values from the dose report image by applyingan optical character recognition technique, and thereby obtaining SSDE values for each patient. We applied the developed technique to CT exams of 175 pediatric patients and confirmed its successfuloperation.
